Cultures of Giving
This report explores current shifts within the philanthropy sector and showcases key learnings, best practices and successful models to promote and enhance philanthropy and giving among communities of color. Among these learnings, the report reveals several factors catalyzing the current evolution of philanthropy: - The face of philanthropy is rapidly changing to become as ethnically, culturally and socioeconomically diverse as our country's population.
- Collective power, action and resources exist within communities of color that conventional philanthropy has not fully recognized, embraced and partnered with to bring about change.
- Understanding and supporting this emerging area of philanthropy are becoming increasingly essential for any foundation, funder or donor who wants to drive social change.

Right: Starkly beautiful in its austere appearance and its unflinchingly straightforward concept, artist and longtime peace activist Yoko Ono's all-white chess set Play It by Trust marries the spare, geometric lines of Minimalism with the intimate, playful interactivity of the games produced by the members of Fluxus, an international avant-garde movement with which Ono was associated in the 1960s.

SOS Impact: Lydia's House
|
Lydia's House is the only transitional housing program in Eastern Missouri that is specifically for battered and abused women and their children and that offers immediate community. They have 36 confidentially located, fully furnished apartments where families can find refuge, safety, and support.
In addition to offering secure housing, Lydia's House provides each family with their own advocate to help guide them through the recovering process. Each family member is connected to supportive services and both individual and group experiences that will help them regain control of their lives while building resources necessary for not only surviving, but thriving, in the wake of violence.
SOS has provided Lydia's House with three grants totaling $45,000 in the 2007, 2008, and 2011 grant cycles. Learn more about Lydia's House by visiting their website.

Over the last five years SOS has experienced continuous and steady growth, and this year we are celebrating a benchmark: over $1 million of giving to the St. Louis community.
We think this is a good time to assess our successes and identify areas that need attention. Because SOS is committed to its democratic process, we would like to hear from all of our members to help us improve the way we deliver our mission. In order to do this we have created a survey and would appreciate your feedback. Your candid and thoughtful survey responses will help us in our evaluation process.
The Survey Monkey should take you no more than fifteen minutes to complete. Any information you include will be managed confidentially. Your participation in this survey is very much appreciated.
You received a link on February 1 that was uniquely tied to your email address. Please check your email for the link and complete the survey by February 7.

Previously SOS membership renewal letters were sent to an individual member on her particular anniversary date. Now, SOS will send membership renewal letters four times a year. A member will receive her renewal letter in the quarter which contains her anniversary date. This change will be cost effective, simplify administration, provide an opportunity for year-end gift planning, and maximize the grant funds available in each granting cycle.
The new procedure will not change the amount you owe or when you owe it. Going forward, you will receive a renewal letter one month prior to the quarter which includes your membership anniversary date.
For example, if your membership anniversary date is February 15, you are in the first quarterly cycle and you will receive a renewal notice in December (that is, prior to February). You may pay your renewal in December, January or February.
