2007 Grantees
- 1. Angel’s Arms (Social Services - $15,000)
Mission is to provide a home for foster parents that will enable them to take
in brothers and sisters to keep sibling groups together until a forever home
is found. Grant will be used to help pay down the mortgage of their newest
home in North St. Louis County.
- 2. Gateway to Hope (Health - $20,000)
Mission is to arrange comprehensive medical and surgical treatment for uninsured
and underinsured women with breast cancer. Grant will help cover marketing
and outreach expenses to spread awareness of their program to as many people
as possible in the area so that every uninsured patient in need of services
has an opportunity to get them before the disease has diminished their chances
for survival.
- 3. George Washington Carver
House (Social Services - $15,000)
Mission is to improve the quality of life for residents in the 63106 and 63107
zip codes which have been identified as having the poorest health and largest
number of at risk youth in the St. Louis community. Grant will help build their
Grandparents as Parents (GAP) to assist grandmothers who are raising their
grandchildren and great grandchildren to allow them to live in their own homes
as long as possible and avoid foster care.
- 4. La Clinica (Health - $10,000)
Mission is to provide respectful and compassionate professional health care
in a culturally sensitive setting focusing on a growing uninsured population
who face language and cultural barriers to obtaining proper medical care – 80% of whom are
Latino immigrants or refugees who do not qualify for Medicare or Medicaid. Grant
will provide funding for their prenatal Healthy Baby Program.
- 5. Lydia’s House (Social Services - $10,000)
Mission is to end domestic violence by being a place of healing and a voice
for abused women and their children. Over ten years, the organization has an
85% effective rate of women leaving the program with stable employment and
safe housing and less than 5% returning to abusers. Grant will help fund their
Transitional Housing and Support Services Program to offer women and their
children the space, time and support they need to create independent, violence-free
lives.
- 6. Mildred and Rena Martin Charitable Eye Foundation (Health - $20,000)
No website Mission is to provide free comprehensive eye care to medically indigent
people. Clinic is opened 2 afternoons a week treating 20 – 24 patients a week. Grant will pay for
glasses and low vision aids for over 500 people.
- 7. Redevelopment Opportunities for Women (Social Services - $15,000)
Mission is to empower abused women and their families to build safety, skills,
economic security and hope for the future. Grant will support their Economic
Action Program, an economic advocacy project targeted toward women impacted
by domestic violence, poverty and/or homelessness.
- 8. Voices for Children (Social Services - $10,000) Mission is to provide
quality legal advocacy for children in the city of St. Louis who have been
abused/neglected and taken into foster care. Grant will support the salary
and benefits of a Child Welfare Specialist Attorney for the “Aging Out” Initiative,
targeting foster children who are turning 18 to ensure they have the specific
emotional, economic and educational resources these children need.
- 9. Women in Charge (Education - $10,000)
Mission is to use a holistic approach of mind, body and spirit in support of
economically disadvantaged women in transition who are striving to help themselves
and their families by achieving important life goals for school and work. Grant
will support their GED/Literacy and Parenting Program for women trying to break
the cycle of poverty for themselves and their children. Grant will also support
childcare services for these women.
